We are excited to announce Freshwater Exotics’ upcoming expedition, Return to the Amazon – Brazil 2019! This expedition will take place in Brazil where we will discover incredible new regions of the vast Brazilian Amazon and observe rarely-seen pieces of the aquarium industry. The trip dates are October 21st through November 29th, 2019.

The Mighty Rio Xingu

During Return to the Amazon, are most excited about a visit to Altamira. Here we will immerse ourselves in the Rio Xingu, Rio Iriri and Volta Grande region of the Brazilian Amazon.

We will spend time with piaberos (artisanal fishermen) in this region. Their collection practices differ from what we witnessed last year during our Into the Amazon expedition to the Rio Negro.

It will be an eye-opening experience to travel to small fishing villages with employees of one of our exporters. Witnessing the pick-up of ornamental fish orders will give us a new perspective on this little-known piece of the aquarium industry.

Visiting Leando Sousa’s facility in Altamira and the Belo Monte Dam are icing on the ornamental fish cake (eeew)! Visiting his research facility and L46 Zebra pleco breeding project will be fascinating!

Discus Fisheries

Discus collection is another major portion of this year’s Return to the Amazon expedition. We will travel with another one of our exporters to Uatuma and/or Madiera to visit discus fisheries and witness how the piaberos collect discus. Perhaps we will even get to see our exporter selecting discus for this season’s stock.

Return to the Amazon wouldn’t be complete without a visit to our beloved Belém. This time we will give you an even more in-depth, behind the scenes look at the largest export facility in South America.

It’s hard to spend 40 days in the Amazon and realize that no matter how many times we return, we won’t even be brushing the surface of what is to be discovered. Which is why we plan to bring a small number of ornamental fish enthusiasts with us for our 2020 Amazon expedition.

Our expeditions we offer will be one of the most unique and immersive experiences an ornamental fish enthusiast could possibly experience. The 2020 expeditions will take place in November.
